Suppressors, also known as "silencers" or "sound moderators," are among the most controversial yet fascinating firearm accessories. Often mistakenly portrayed in movies as devices that completely silence the sound of a gunshot, in reality, they serve a much more complex function.
From this article, you will learn:
A suppressor is a device mounted on the muzzle of a firearm, primarily designed to reduce the noise generated by a gunshot. It works by lowering the pressure of the propellant gases and slowing their expansion after they exit the barrel. Many models also reduce muzzle flash, which is especially important in low-light or nighttime conditions. Contrary to popular belief, a suppressor does not make a firearm "silent." Even the most technologically advanced suppressor only reduces the noise to a level comparable to a hammer striking steel—still loud, but significantly quieter than an unsuppressed shot.
Suppressors have a wide range of applications across various fields. In the military and law enforcement, they are used by special operations units, where reducing noise and muzzle flash significantly improves the effectiveness and safety of tactical operations. Suppressors also facilitate communication between soldiers during firefights. In the hunting community, suppressors are used to protect hearing—both the hunter’s and that of their hunting dogs—and to avoid scaring off game with follow-up shots. Suppressors are also popular in sport and recreational shooting. At shooting ranges, especially indoor ones, they greatly enhance user comfort by reducing noise and minimizing unpleasant sound reflections from walls.
In Poland, owning sound suppressors (also known as firearm silencers) is legal and does not require a permit. A suppressor is not considered an essential component of a firearm under the Firearms and Ammunition Act, which means its ownership is not subject to regulation. However, the use of suppressors is restricted. In practice, their use is permitted only in specific, legally defined circumstances.
Many myths surround suppressors—most of which have little basis in reality. One of the most common is the belief that a suppressed gunshot is completely silent. In reality, the sound is only partially reduced—especially when using supersonic ammunition, which creates its own distinctive "sonic crack." Another widespread myth is that suppressors reduce a firearm’s accuracy. In fact, a properly fitted and correctly mounted suppressor can actually improve accuracy by reducing recoil and muzzle rise. It's also often assumed that suppressors are primarily tools used by criminals. This idea is largely fueled by action movies, but in reality, suppressors are widely used by professionals, sport shooters, and hunters who prioritize comfort and safety when handling firearms.
Suppressors for firearms are not just intriguing gadgets made famous by action movies—they are, above all, practical and technologically advanced devices. Their primary purpose is not to completely silence a firearm, but to enhance shooting comfort by reducing noise, muzzle flash, and recoil. Although their use is restricted in Poland, in many countries suppressors are standard equipment for both sport shooters and hunters. It’s worth viewing suppressors not through the lens of myths, but as part of a conscious, responsible, and professional approach to shooting.
